Life became so meaningful with you around.
I just saw this on WF's blog and I felt really happy reading it! :) I missed Fairfield :(

Teaching at their alma mater by Teo Xuanwei

IT TURNED 121 years old this year. So, the fact that Fairfield Methodist School has possibly churned out the most number of teachers in Singapore is perhaps not surprising.

Still, it is an achievement that should not be dismissed lightly.

Although there are no official figures, the sheer number of former Fairsians in the education industry here bears testimony to the nurturing quality of its teachers.

Many ex-Fairsians are now principals in schools - Ms Doris Ho Sook Fun at Geylang Methodist School and Madam Julie Tan Bee Lian at Raffles Girls School are just two examples. Several have also become directors in the Ministry of Education (MOE).

But what is truly special is that a great many of them have chosen to return to their alma mater as teachers.

Today, about one in five of the 160 teaching staff in Fairfield's primary and secondary schools are alumni. And many of the young teachers (picture) are now colleagues of their former teachers.

Fairfield's previous four principals - starting with their first Asian principal in 1946, the late Mrs Lim Bock Kee - were also old girls.

When Australian missionary Sophia Blackmore founded the school, it was named Telok Ayer Girls' School and had only eight students.

It was renamed Fairfield Girls' School in 1912 after a certain Mr Fairfield (his identity and background are untraceable) donated $5,000 for the school's new building in Neil Road. In 1958, it adopted its current name.

In 1983, after it relocated to its current premises at Dover Road, the school also became co-ed and split into primary and secondary schools.

So what is it about the school that's drawing so many of its students into the teaching profession?

A common answer, if you ask any former Fairsian: To show gratitude for what they had received from their own teachers.

Fairfield's education model throughout its history, said the primary school's vice-principal David Chan, is guided by the culture of inclusiveness.

"We were always taught that every individual matters and success is being the best that you can be," he said.

"The teachers value you for who you are and I believe many of us are deeply impacted by such a culture and feel the responsibility to continue the same nurturing culture as teachers of future generations," said Mr Chan, 34, himself an old boy.

Added Ms Pamela Tan, 28, who teaches Design and Technology: "Many of us feel that Fairfield is like home ... and many of us drew the passion for teaching from the care our own teachers showed us when we were studying in Fairfield."

And what better way to give back than to return to Fairfield.

"Some of my students now are actually children of my own teachers. Being a teacher in Fairfield, I feel I can give back to what the school has given to me by showing them what I received from their parents as a student; the values of compassion, integrity and sacrifice," said Mr Glen Tan, 29, who teaches Mathematics in the secondary school.

Life became so meaningful with you around.
Alright so on tuesday I made a trip back to Kluang with my cousins. It was quite eventful cause we couldn't make it for the bus, and had to rush to the tanjong pagar railway station(all the way from boon lay) to catch the last train! :/ My cousin's super nice friend drove us there(well u know guys will do whatever the girl wants if they're wooing them? BUT why is it that they can't MAINTAIN that since they've alr started doing it, after they've gotten the girl?) We made it but only reached Kluang at like 1am?! -_-" I was quite pissed cause the stupid train stopped at some place for really long argh! But its quite a cool experience to take train back to Msia with my cousins! Cause we dun really take railway trains back ysee haha! It's usually either car or bus.

5th Aunt(Cousin Jun Quan's Mum) picked us up and off we went to have supper!(after sending her home though :) ) :D It's good that we all knew how to drive now, which allows us to go anywhere we want as long as a car is available for our usage lol. Roti pisang, roti tissue, roti mushroom cheese and mee goreng pattaya! :D YAY i missed them soooo much!!! :) Then we started driving around aimlessly and Cousin Shi Ying went crazy, singing Count On Me Singapore at the top of her voice. I think we'll be dead if she does that in the day -_-" We were in Malaysia for goodness's sake, you go "count on me s'pore" some more and the yalam will start throwing things at us -_-"
We only got home at 2 plus and slept at around 3 :/

Woke up early to have bak kut teh for breakfast, but the famous stall wasn't opened until 5 pm :S & so we had toasted and steamed bread instead! Yummy Yummy Yummy! It's so much nicer then Yak Kun! Cheaper also hahha! & we saw this Chendol stall by the roadside(picture above). My cousins told me that his chendol is very nice and he's like the 4th generation or smtg alr, but a pity that i dun like/appreciate chendol haha! Cousin Jun Quan's like our Chauffeur for the whole day haha. He drove us to whatever places that we wanted :P

& they insisted that I should try the KFC in M'sia cause its very different from the ones in S'pore. I tried it, and what I can say is that: it's more chrispy and less oily. & I think just these two reasons, it's enough to say that M'sia KFC is better that S'pore's lol.

Near the end of the day, we decided to visit the Pasar Malam to get some food to eat on the bus back to S'pore. I like the kaya ball!! :D 5 for Rm 1 hahaha! Nicey nicey nice! :) Bought deep fried jackfruit too, my first time trying it haha! Basically I was treated like some tourist -_-"

Back to Singapore! :D
